Professional teeth cleaning (PTC)
Regular professional teeth cleaning to avoid decay and periodontal disease
Every day, your teeth are exposed to bacteria that discolor or soften the surface of your teeth. A conventional toothbrush, regardless of whether a hand-held or an electric toothbrush, does not sufficiently clean 40 to 60% of surfaces that are susceptible to tartar. Bacteria will collect on these surfaces, resulting in decay or periodontitis.
Only professional teeth cleaning can clean these surfaces that are hard to reach by a toothbrush. Therefore, regular teeth cleaning by your dentist is of highest importance for the preservation of healthy and beautiful teeth and gums.
What happens during professional teeth cleaning (PTC)
– Thorough examination of your teeth and oral cavity.
– Determination of oral hygiene values(plaque index) in order to identify the areas that are vulnerable to decay or periodontal disease
– Then our dentist removesthe hard and soft surface coating (tartar and plaque) that is hard to reach with a toothbrush from the teeth, inter-dental spaces and gum line.
– Next, we remove stubborn tooth discolorations that were caused by tea, coffee, red wine or nicotine with an air-abrasion device (air flow/salt powder/water solution).
– To make the colonization of bacteria more difficult and thereby prevent a repeated formation of tartar, the teeth are polished.
Professional teeth cleaning lasts about one hour.
Regular dental check-ups and professional teeth cleaning 2 to 4 times per year as well as consistent dental hygiene measures at home not only prevent decay and periodontal disease, but also vascular and heart disease, which in many cases can be attributed to problems in the oral cavity.
